- For security reasons, the faces of adult asylum seekers have not been photographed -
In the first 3 months of 2006, already 127 new request of asylum from Russian citizens (95% are from Chechnya) have been made in Switzerland. This is a augmentation of 38% compare to 2005. Russian citizens represent 5.2% of the refugees in Switzerland.
The two wars of 1994-1996 and 1999-to present between Russia and Chechnya, in Northern Caucasus, the fight for independence, has had catastrophic consequences for the rebellious republic. Over 250 thousand people, mostly women and children, have been killed by Russian soldiers, and 350 thousand citizens have been forced to abandon their houses. In spite of the President Putin’s reassurance that the war is over and his call for Chechens to return home and rebuild their cities, great numbers of Chechens still leave their country in search of safety and peace.
