The two wars of 1994-1996 and 1999-to present between Russia and Chechnya, in Northern Caucasus, the fight for independence, has had catastrophic consequences for the rebellious republic. Over 250 thousand people, mostly women and children, have been killed by Russian soldiers, and 350 thousand citizens have been forced to abandon their houses. In spite of the President Putin’s reassurance that the war is over and his call for Chechens to return home and rebuild their cities, great numbers of Chechens still leave their country in search of safety and peace. In Poland, which became a “green-border” country upon its accession to the EU in May 2004, over 300 refugees form Chechnya filed applications for political asylum during the first week of October 2005 alone. In the last twelve months, out of the 10,000 refugees applying for asylum in Poland, 95% come from the Russian Federation...
